Temperament Evaluation Is Key To Happy, Safe Play and An Environment That Is Fun for ALL

If your dog needs boarding, daycare, or help with bad behavior, a dog temperament evaluation is the first step.

At Universal Dog Care Orlando, we help dog owners understand their dog’s behavior before problems get worse.

A temperament evaluation shows how your dog acts around people, other dogs, stress, and new places. This helps us know which environment we need to provide for boarding or daycare.

It also helps us find problems like aggression, fear, anxiety, or reactivity early so we can head them off before they even get started.

Why Dog Temperament Evaluations Matter

Not every dog is outgoing and friendly. Some dogs are observant. Some dogs are shy.

Some dogs get nervous. Some become reactive. Some may act aggressive

around other dogs or people.

This can cause:

  • Dog fights

  • Stress during boarding

  • Failed daycare approval

  • Injuries to staff or other dogs

  • Worse behavior at home

  • Training problems later

A dog temperament test helps detect these problems before they happen and structure the

environment so that every dog gets has a safe time with their Paw Friends.

Human Handling Tolerance

Your dog must be safe with people. We love dogs but we are not their chew toy.

Boarding staff, trainers, and groomers all need to handle your dog safely.

We check:

  • How your dog reacts to touch

  • Grooming behavior

  • Tension in their body

  • Reactions to strangers

  • Fear or snapping

  • Comfort with handling

This helps keep everyone safe.

Anxiety and Stress Triggers

Stress can cause many bad behaviors.

Some dogs feel scared easily.

We look for:

  • Separation anxiety

  • Fear of loud sounds (fireworks, thunder, etc)

  • Nervous behavior

  • Stress in new places

  • Fast panic reactions

  • Trouble calming down

Understanding stress triggers is only the first step. See how our team proactively prevents anxiety and supports your dog's emotional well-being.

Knowing these triggers helps us build a better care plan.

Socialization Readiness

Not every dog is ready for daycare right away.

Some dogs need acclimation first.

We check:

  • Confidence in new places

  • Comfort around new dogs

  • Recovery after stress

  • Self-control

  • Overstimulation

  • Ability to follow structure

Sometimes slow progress is the best progress.

We will work with your dog to become more adapted to the environment and exposure to other dogs.

Dog-to-Dog Interactions

Some dogs love other dogs. Some do not.

We check how your dog acts around other dogs.

We look for:

  • Safe play behavior

  • Signs of aggression

  • Fear around other dogs

  • Dominant behavior

  • Sharing toys and food

  • Group daycare safety

This helps us decide if your dog needs special handling to stay safe and comfortabe for daycare or boarding.

This is not a ONE AND DONE…it is a process of getting to know a dog and their tolerance. Tolerance can shift throughout the day, based on new experience, fatigue, or a Best Paw Friend leaving.

Resource Guarding

Some dogs protect food, toys, or space.

This is called resource guarding.

We check for:

  • Food guarding (all dogs are fed and watered separately)

  • Toy guarding (we do not allow toys or other personal items)

  • Sofa or recliner guarding (we have 9 couches and recliners)

  • Owner guarding (usually happens at the car)

  • Space protection(like a corner or near the door)

  • Fast anger during conflict (seems totally fine, then just reacts negatively)

Finding this early helps prevent serious problems.

Reactivity and Aggression

Aggression should always be taken seriously.

We check:

  • Barking and lunging on walks

  • Aggression toward dogs

  • Aggression toward people

  • Fence aggression

  • Fear-based aggression

  • Redirected aggression

This helps us choose the safest next step for your dog.

We Temperament Test ALL Dogs Against ALL Other Dogs

You should let us know if:

  • Your dog was denied daycare

  • Your dog shows aggression

  • Walks are hard because of reactivity

  • Your dog struggles around people or dog

  • Your dog guards food or toys

  • Your dog has anxiety or fear

The sooner you disclose behavior, the easier it is to accomodate. If your dog had any of these, we do not automatically reject them. We work with dogs many other places do reject. We need to know. We need to get a plan together. We need your help to keep everyone safe.
